On 15 March 2025, we brought our first cattle to MNC Farms in Grand Bassa County, Liberia. There were five animals in the group: one male, two adult female cows, and their two female calves.

We were very excited. This was our first experience of keeping cattle, and their arrival opened a new chapter for the farm. After starting with our ducks, we now had a small herd to care for as well.

The cost of our first herd

We paid US$1,300 for each of the two adult female cows and US$1,400 for the male. Each of the two female calves cost US$800. Altogether, the purchase price of the five cattle was US$5,600.

These were the animals with which our cattle-keeping journey began. Recording the prices is part of remembering what it took to get started.

A dedicated worker for the cattle

We assigned an employee specifically to look after the cattle. Having someone responsible for them was important to us, particularly because we were doing this for the first time.

The cattle were not friendly during those initial days. Although we were excited to have them, handling them was a new experience for us. Our worker knew how to manage and control them, and that experience helped us through the beginning.

Mothers and their calves

The two adult female cows arrived with their two female calves. Our first herd therefore included both grown cattle and young animals from the outset.

The photographs from this stage show the cattle on the farm land, including a cow and calf together in the grass. They give us a record of the animals at the beginning of this part of our story.

Our first steps with cattle

Starting with cattle brought excitement and responsibility together. We had made the purchase, brought the animals to the farm, and put a dedicated worker in charge of their care. We also had plenty to learn.

Looking back, we remember both the excitement of their arrival and the challenge of handling them at first. Our worker’s knowledge mattered during those early days. With these five cattle, the next stage of the MNC Farms journey had begun.
